Louise Chazin (1903- ), community activist for the aged (age 55 and over) and founder of many New York City community based organizations, was born in Austria-Hungary. In 1921, Chazin emigrated to the United States. At the age of 70, Chazin who had long since retired from a career as a novelty designer, came out of retirement and launched a second career as a civil rights activist for the elderly. Chazin was the founder or co-founder of the Mid-Bronx Jewish Community Council, the North Central Council on Aging and the Bronx Council on the Aging (BCA). The Bronx Council on the Aging drew its membership from New York City senior citizen centers and interested individuals. The BCA became one of the most important voices from the Bronx to speak on behalf of the elderly. Chazin also served as chairperson or board member in the following organizations: Northwest Bronx Council for Older Adults, Community Council of Greater New York, Comprehensive Health Planing District E, Mid Bronx Senior Citizens Council, Montefiore Outpatient Department, Mosholu-Montefiore Senior Citizens Center, Bronx YMCA Senior Citizens Center, Congress of Senior Citizens of New York, National Council of Senior Citizens and Community Board # 7 - Bronx. Papers reflect Louise Chazin's commitment to improve the quality of life of the aged individual via her activism in organizations that focused on the environment, medical and social needs of the elderly. Papers also reflect the interaction between Chazin and the organizations and individuals who worked with her. Noted organizations in the papers include the Bronx Council on Aging, Community Board #7 in the Bronx, the New York City Human Resource Agency, and the New York City Senior Citizens Advisory Committee to the Mass Transit Authority. Organizations represented to a lesser extent include the Community Council of Greater New York. Noted important conferences represented in the papers for the year 1981 are the New York State Governor's Conference on Aging and the White House Conference on Aging. The remaining material consists of a few photographs of Chazin.
